Viacom inks for Nielsen data

Deal estimated at $7 mil per year

NEW YORK — Viacom has signed a new seven-year deal to buy data from Nielsen Media Research for seven Viacom cable networks: MTV, VH1, Nickelodeon, TV Land, Showtime, the Movie Channel and the Box.

Neither Viacom nor Nielsen would discuss the deal’s value, but sources say Viacom could be ponying up about $7 million a year to collect all the numbers published by Nielsen.

“This deal should help Nielsen’s standing on Wall Street,” said Howard Nass, senior VP and corporate director of broadcast for True North Media.

The one new element in the deal is the Box, in which Viacom owns an equity stake.
