Politico slams Deutsche Welle

B'caster to lay off 1,700 employees

BERLIN — The president of the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia has called the budget cuts of foreign service pubcaster Deutsche Welle “unacceptable,” and demanded that Germany be on a par with leading international players when it comes to world service broadcasters.

Wolfgang Clement said Germany’s foreign broadcaster should at least measure up to that of Britain, France and the U.S., adding that these countries’ international TV services were far ahead.

The state leader underlined the cultural and political importance of a national foreign broadcaster and called for a cooperative effort between the Deutsche Welle and pubcasters ARD and ZDF.

Clement has been in talks with federal government leaders on behalf of the financially-strapped broadcaster, which announced last week it will be laying off 745 of its approximately 1,700 employees due to budget cuts of around 30%.
