Marvel reports $11 mil loss, sales rise

2nd qtr. sales reached $137 mil versus $91 mil in '98

Comic book giant Marvel Entertainment has reported a second-quarter net loss of $11 million, compared to a profit of $3 million last year. Overall company sales, driven by its licensing and publishing operations, reached $137 million, compared to a previous $91 million.

The New York-based company reported $7 million in sales from its licensing division, while its publishing operation collected $11 million for the period ended June 30.

The loss in net income was attributed to the addition of the licensing and publishing divisions, as well as the one- time charge made in connection with the dismissal of company’s previous CEO.
