Lions Gate taps Meyer as veepee

VP of intl sales, distrib formerly of Sony

CANNES — Sony Pictures exec Nick Meyer has joined Lions Gate Films Intl. as VP of international sales and distribution.

Meyer, who starts work immediately, will report to Joe Drake, president of LGFI, the foreign sales division of Canada’s Lions Gate Entertainment. He will be based in Los Angeles.

At LGFI, Meyer will work with Drake in positioning, selling and marketing the company’s product overseas. Lions Gate, which has its own domestic releasing arm, is handling “American Psycho,” directed by Mary Harron and starring Christian Bale and Willem Dafoe.

In February, LGFI inked a deal to handle the international sales of three independent pics from Nicolas Cage and Jeff Levine’s Saturn Films. The first of these, “Shadow of a Vampire,” is a co-production with BBC Films and stars Dafoe and John Malkovich.

“Nick’s international capabilities and aggressive marketing skills will help maximize our international profile as well as that of our entire slate,” Drake said.

At Sony, Meyer was based in the studio’s Columbia TriStar Motion Picture Group division, where he served as director of worldwide theatrical sales and distribution, reporting to senior VPs Peter Schlessel and Clint Culpepper. Meyer was responsible for overseeing the international theatrical sub-distribution of pics such as “The Opposite of Sex” and “Big Night.”

Before joining Sony, Meyer worked in advertising and publicity for its specialty arm, Sony Pictures Classics, on “Lone Star,” “Burnt by the Sun” and “Welcome to the Dollhouse,” among other titles.
