Legal eagle Putnam takes flight

Barnes Morris law firm adds media attorney to roster

Media attorney Marvin Putnam has joined the growing Santa Monica-based entertainment law firm Barnes Morris & Yorn.

Putnam joins the 3-year-old boutique from Gotham-based Cahill Gordon & Reindel, where he worked as part of the firm’s First Amendment group, lead by Floyd Abrams.

Putnam, a Harvard undergrad and 1993 graduate of Georgetown U. Law Center, began his career working as clerk to Judge Robert B. Andewelt in the U.S. Claims Court in Washington, D.C.

Experience counts

Putnam’s experience includes involvement in civil, criminal, transactional, regulatory and investigatory matters, including international and domestic transactional negotiations, on-set prebroadcast and prepublication legal review. He has represented media companies and executives in cases involving federal and state defamation issues, at both the trial and appellate levels.

“We are thrilled Marvin has joined the firm,” partner Kevin Morris said. “Quite simply, he is the most talented attorney we’ve met since starting our business. He adds exponential value to our increasingly demanding practice, and in attracting Marvin, we’ve hit critical mass earlier than we ever previously imagined.”

That “critical mass” has been achieved with the addition of Putnam as well as five other attorneys who have joined the now 10-person firm within the last year.

Major clients

Formed in 1996 by Morris, Michael Barnes and Kevin Yorn, the firm represents actors John Cusack, Matthew McConaughey, Minnie Driver, Gabriel Byrne, Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Cooper, Anne Heche, Josh Brolin and Famke Janssen; and writer-directors Trey Parker and Matt Stone (“South Park”).

Corporate clients include Artists Management Group, Propaganda Films, City National Bank, Intl. Film Guarantors, Lions Gate Films and Broadband Interactive Group.
