NEW YORK — Imagine vice president Jim Whitaker, who co-produced the hit “Life” and is a key exec on “The Nutty Professor II,” has been promoted to senior vice president of production for Imagine. The appointment was announced by Imagine chairperson Karen Kehela.
Whitaker’s appointment is proof that one doesn’t have to start at the top to rise through the production ranks. He entered the business by way of craft services on the John Waters film “Hairspray,” after which he became an assistant cameraman on indies and commercials before moving over to documentaries. Whitaker began at Imagine as an intern while attending the Peter Stark Producing Program at USC. He was appointed creative executive in 1995 and worked his way up from director of development.
Whitaker was associate producer on the Gus Van Sant-directed “Psycho,” and is working on numerous potential plum projects that include the Imagine-Alphaville co-production “Bride of Frankenstein,” “Intolerable Cruelty,” “The Gelfin,” “Good King Harry,” “The Other Woman” with Shonda Rhimes writing, a bio of “James Brown” being written by Steven Baigelman and “The Bay of Pigs,” which Shane Salerno is scripting.
