Sports agent Jeff Schwartz has been tapped to head up Artists Management Group’s latest division, AMG Sports.
Schwartz, who previously worked at sports powerhouse International Management Group, will head up the division from AMG’s Beverly Hills offices. Among the clients Schwartz brings with him are tennis players Pete Sampras and Marcelo Rios and the Los Angeles Clippers’ basketball player Lamar Odom.
According to an AMG statement, the new division’s initial focus will be managing professional athletes; development and distribution of sports programming for TV and new media; creating merchandising, marketing and sponsorship opportunities for clients; and consulting on various sports properties.
“It’s a natural for AMG to enter the sports business when the relationship between sports and entertainment is becoming closer than ever,” said AMG partner Rick Yorn.
“We brought Jeff in because he not only knows the sports world, but he understands the dynamics between the sports and entertainment businesses,” added AMG’s Michael Ovitz.
Schwartz spent nearly seven years with IMG before ankling the firm in February.
Schwartz told Daily Variety that he intends to hire several managers and is already in discussions with potential clients.
“I want to use AMG’s resources to better manage clients and create new marketing opportunities for them,” said Schwartz.
