WASHINGTON — House minority leader Richard Gephardt (D-Mo.) and other Democratic House leaders will meet today with entertainment industry reps Tuesday.
Those invited include broadcasting, studio and creative reps. In addition to Motion Picture Assn. of America prexy Jack Valenti, Gephardt is also inviting Writers Guild rep Margaret Cone.
This is not the first meeting between Gephardt and the entertainment industry: During a recent swing through Los Angeles, he met with studio chiefs. Gephardt wants to make it clear to showbiz reps that he and his party consider themselves defenders of Hollywood in Washington — especially now as the House and Senate meet to hammer out their different approaches to gun control.
Mixed in with both the House and Senate versions of the legislation are proposals to study the entertainment industry. The goal of the research would be to establish what connection, if any, there is between exposure to fictional violence and real acts of violence committed by children.
