WASHINGTON — A proposed Senate task force on culture in America must examine gun violence, said Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) in a letter to Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott.
The Senate had been considering the creation of a special Committee on American Culture, but faced with opposition from Democrats, downgraded the proposal to a task force.
Boxer proposed legislation that would have required the Senate to look at gun violence if it had proceeded with a committee on culture. Now Boxer wants to ensure that the task force, if approved, takes a look at guns.
“I simply cannot understand how it is possible to create a task force that would study the causes of violence in America without considering the role of guns in society,” Boxer said in her letter to Lott (R-Miss.). “If you were to leave guns out of the mix, I would be compelled to raise this matter on the floor of the Senate.”
