Silver goes into ‘Closet’

Addition of thesp part of series revamp

Ron Silver is moving into “Veronica’s Closet” as part of a second-season renovation of the Kirstie Alley sitcom.

Silver will play Alec, a wealthy businessman who takes control of the lingerie company owned by Alley’s title character. An Alec-Veronica romance is likely.

In addition, another male character will be added to the series early next season, producers said.

While a place on NBC’s hit Thursday lineup helped make “Closet” one of last season’s highest-rated new shows, execs at NBC and Warner Bros. weren’t thrilled with the overall creative direction of the series. The cast additions are part of a plan to refocus the show, making it more of an ensemble with more appeal to male viewers.

NBC Entertainment president Warren Littlefield says he’s “optimistic” about its creative future, noting that exec producer Marta Kauffman told him last May the series had not lived up to its potential.

“She said, ‘We have to do a better job with this show. We’ve let you down this year,’ ” Littlefield recalled.
