Pax TV gets ‘Reel’ with new gameshow

Show is promo for board game

MIAMI — Pax TV, the soon-to-launch broadcast net from Paxson Communications, has added original gameshow “The Reel to Reel Picture Show” to its lineup.

Emceed by longtime “Hollywood Squares” host Peter Marshall, film trivia-based “Reel” will bow on Pax TV’s launch day, Aug. 31, at 2:30 p.m.

Show pits two teams in a contest for film-themed prizes, with one member of each team a celebrity. Confirmed guests for the early segs include Shelley Duvall, Abe Vigoda, Patty Duke and Robert Hays.

Showing weekdays, with a best-of on Sunday nights, the half-hour program is based on the Reel to Reel Picture Show board game, a hot item in Canada and the U.K. since its launch in 1996.

“Reel” will be produced at Orlando’s Universal Studios Florida — just up the road from Paxson’s West Palm Beach HQ — where producers TIL Prods. are based.

TIL topper Sandy Cherry told Daily Variety that the show was conceived as a marketing tool for the board game’s pending launch into the U.S.

“To market anything in the U.S. is so expensive, and you need television, so I thought a gameshow would be great publicity for it,” Cherry said.

Cherry, a former engineer from Scotland, designed the board game to indulge a lifelong passion for movie trivia.

Paxson has committed to 200 rounds, and Cherry is meanwhile shopping a U.K. version of the show to British broadcasters.

“With the public’s interest in movies at an all-time high, ‘Reel to Reel’ will be a welcome addition to the TV landscape,” said Pax TV programming prez Bill Scott.

“Reel” joins original shows including Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Men,” “Neon Rider” and a new series of “Flipper” as part of the Pax TV slate.
