MGM Intl. TV taps Armstrong

Exec slides into senior veep slot

David Armstrong has been tapped senior VP of sales and distribution of MGM Intl. Television, a new executive position within the studio’s Worldwide Television Group.

Armstrong, who joins from USA Networks Intl., oversees sales and distribution of all MGM programming to stations in the international free TV arena.

Armstrong effectively becomes the third part of the international exec team, the other two being Rick Phillips, exec VP of international networks, and Simon Sutton, VP of worldwide pay TV. All three report to James Griffiths, president of Intl. Television Distribution and MGM Networks.

Armstrong has extensive industry experience, having most recently served as VP, programming and acquisitions, at USA Networks Intl. In that capacity he oversaw the programming of USA Network and Sci-Fi Channel in Europe, Asia, Africa and Canada.

Prior to his position at USA, Armstrong spent four years with All American Television as senior VP of sales and acquisitions, and before that was at Vestron Television for four years.

“David has the ideal experience to help us effectively position the MGM catalog in international markets,” Griffiths said in a statement. “His reputation as a skilled negotiator, coupled with his vast knowledge of international distribution channels, will be vital to our success as we penetrate untapped markets and maximize our presence in already-developed territories.”
