Station sources say “Springer” distrib Studios USA has quietly been shopping a sixth weekend telecast of its red-hot talkshow, pitching a weekend latenight installment of “Springer” as good counterprogramming to NBC’s “SNL” and CBS’ new Stern latenight vehicle, set to bow Aug. 22. Station sources said there has been talk of making the sixth hour a weekly “Springer” highlights reel. Reps for USA declined to comment last week on the matter, but a number of affils are said to be seriously considering taking a sixth run of “Springer.”

Meanwhile, in a move sure to throw fuel on the smoldering firestorm over the risque topics explored on “Springer,” the distrib reportedly has sent out an alternate episode for the skedded May 22 show dealing with people and their love for pets, aka bestiality. No word yet on which animal rights activists would be among the featured panelists, or the subject of the tamer alternative seg.
