Alphabet taps Addy for sitcom

'Monty' Brit becomes 'Earth Scum'

“The Full Monty” star Mark Addy is set to star as an alien in a Carsey-Werner sitcom for ABC called “Earth Scum.”

The sitcom, in development for midseason, is about a mixed marriage between an alien, played by Addy, and an earthling living on another planet. Carsey-Werner is the production company behind another well-known alien-themed sitcom, NBC’s “3rd Rock From the Sun.”

ABC last October signed British actor Addy to a development deal that included a six-episode penalty commitment (Daily Variety, Oct. 31), which has now been taken over by Carsey-Werner.

The indie production company is expected to seek a 13-episode commitment from ABC for the series, executive produced and written by Phoef Sutton (“Cheers,” “Newhart”), who penned the features “Mrs. Winterbourne” and “The Fan.”

Co-writing and co-executive producing the series is Mark Legan, a producer on “Grace Under Fire” and co-producer on “Dave’s World.”

In the Oscar-nominated Fox Searchlight film “The Full Monty,” Addy played an insecure heavyset man who, along with several unemployed friends, performs a striptease to earn some much-needed cash. Addy later appeared in an episode of ABC’s “The Drew Carey Show,” which spoofed the movie.

In addition to ‘The Full Monty,” Addy has starred in several British TV series, including “The Thin Blue Line,” and he is starring in the British feature “I Love You Love Me Love.” Addy is repped by Andy Cohen, Jane Brand and Nicole Pfeffer at ICM.
