In the first acquisition of a competition film at this year’s fest, October Films has snapped up North American rights to the Danish pic “The Celebration” from World Sales’ Christa Saredi.
“Celebration” was written by Thomas Vinterberg and Mogens Rukov and directed by Vinterberg. Danish outfit Nimbus Film produced.
Story concerns family secrets that bubble to the surface during a large family gathering for a patriarch’s 60th birthday.
Vinterberg is a protege of Danish director Lars Von Trier, whose former Cannes-competition entry “Breaking the Waves” was handled by October in the U.S.
October has U.S. rights to Von Trier’s new pic, “The Idiots,” which is showing here in competition. Von Trier and Peter Aalbaek Jensen’s new sales company, Trust Film Sales, holds international rights to that pic.
