Cannes: Goodbye, ‘Seinfeld’

American Pavilion skeds sat showing of final episode

CANNES — Americans aren’t about to let a little detail like the Cannes Film Festival get in the way of seeing the “Seinfeld” finale.

Bowing to a deluge of requests from U.S. film-biz execs, the American Pavilion has set-up a live, satellite showing of tonight’s much-hyped TV event.

The NBC show will be broadcast 2-4 a.m. at the American Pavilion, simultaneous with the show’s airing on the East Coast of the U.S. A best-of clip show will constitute the first 45 minutes, followed by a 75-minute final seg.

The festivities will be held in conjunction with a bash celebrating the 10th anni of the American Pavilion, with the invite-only soiree kicking-off at 11:30 tonight.

“The consensus was that it was one of those collective experiences,” said American Pavilion director Julie Sisk. “We have a reputation for bringing stuff to Cannes that people miss from home. People are already home-sick after two days.”

Given the late hour, Sisk expects a young crowd to turn-up. Mill Valley Film Festival director Mark Fishkin for one won’t be burning the midnight-oil to catch the last instalment of the comic adventures of Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer.

”I won’t be up for ‘Seinfeld’ after seeing ten hours of movies,” said Fishkin.

Canadian producer Nicolas Clermont (”Free Money”) was equally blase.

”You don’t need a special reason to miss a show about nothing,” said Clermont.

The American Pavilion normally shows simulcasts of NBA playoff games as well, but this year’s hoops parties are on hold awaiting a sponsorship deal. Blues Brothers 2000 director John Landis and stars Dan Aykroyd and John Goodman will cut the ribbon at the official opening of the American Pavilion on Friday at 2:30 p.m.
