LENOX, Mass. — Raquel Welch in the title role of George Bernard Shaw’s “The Millionairess” opened the May 22-Oct. 31 21st season of Shakespeare & Co. at the late Edith Wharton’s estate, the Mount, in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts.
Among the season’s 15 other plays in the Mount’s four theaters will be “The Lear Project,” in which Olympia Dukakis will play Shakespeare’s King Lear.
“The Millionairess” played the Mount from Friday to Monday, then moved to eastern Massachusetts, where it will run from Thursday to June 15 at the Orpheum Theater in Foxborough. “The Lear Project” will open at the Orpheum June 16, run there through June 21 and then move to the Mount for a June 23-28 run.
Shakespeare & Co. founder Tina Packer directed “The Millionairess.” “The Lear Project” is being directed by Dennis Krausnick, a Shakespeare & Co. co-founder. Reportedly, Welch will begin rehearsals for a foreign tour of the Broadway musical “Victor/Victoria” immediately following her run in “The Millionairess.”
At the Mount, the season’s outdoor Mainstage production will be Shakespeare & Co.’s first production of “The Merchant of Venice,” running July 24-Aug. 30.
Other productions will include Steven Dietz’s recent play “Private Eyes,” Shakespeare’s “All’s Well That Ends Well,” “The Taming of the Shrew” and “The Comedy of Errors,” adaptations of Wharton’s “The Dilettante,” “Glimpses of the Moon” and “The Triumph of Darkness,” as well as Guy de Maupassant’s “The Mistress,” Margaret Edson’s “Wit,” Patrick Garland’s adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s “A Room of One’s Own” and a number of special attractions.
