Neuwirth says it’s ‘Over’

Thesp exits legiter

NEW YORK — Bebe Neuwirth has exited the new John Kander-Fred Ebb musical “Over & Over,” which is currently in rehearsal prior to its world premiere next month at the Signature Theater in Arlington, Va.

Signature artistic director Eric D. Schaeffer, who is helming the show, cited “that old cliche, ‘artistic differences,’ ” in announcing Neuwirth’s departure Wednesday. No replacement for Neuwirth was named; the show’s first performance is still scheduled for Jan. 6. Its sold-out run ends Feb. 21.

Neuwirth, who won a Tony for the revival of Kander and Ebb’s “Chicago,” was set to play the maid Sabina in the musical adaptation of Thornton Wilder’s play “The Skin of Our Teeth.”

The musical, Kander and Ebb’s first to premiere at a regional theater, boasts a cast that indicates Broadway hopes, including Dorothy Loudon, David Garrison (“Titanic”), Linda Emond (“1776,” “The Dying Gaul”) and Mario Cantone (“Love! Valour! Compassion!”).

Neuwirth could not be reached for comment.
