‘Chicago’ fires up for worldwide bows

Oz production skedded for July 4

“Chicago” is proving that it’s not a static city. The tuner, currently on Broadway at the Shubert Theater, is readying for a slew of intercontinental bows.

An Australian production will bow at Her Majesty’s Theater in Melbourne on July 4. That production is being produced by “Chicago’s” original New York duo of Barry and Fran Weissler and will be co-presented by IMG.

This fall, the tuner will head to Europe and Scandinavia: A deal has been reached with co-presenter Rudi Klausnitzer for a Vienna production that will bow on Sept. 23 at the Theater an der Wien. A Swedish “Chicago” will open in Gothenburg at Eriksburg Hall, presented with Mikael Hellqvist.

A spokesman for the musical said that productions are being planned for Holland, Germany, South America and Mexico City, and a tour will visit Japan next year, most likely in March. He did not elaborate on dates or venues for those productions.
