‘Winter’ to open Oz film fest

Blethyn stars in 45th Sydney Film fete opener

ROME — One of the year’s most eagerly awaited Australian features, “In the Winter Dark,” will have its world premiere as the opening-night film of the 45th Sydney Film Festival, which kicks off June 5.

Directed by James Bogle, who also scripted with Peter Rasmussen, the drama is based on author Tim Winton’s novel about love, fear and imaginary demons, which is set in an isolated farming valley in Australia.

Produced by Rosemary Blight, the film stars Academy Award-nominated actress Brenda Blethyn (“Secrets and Lies”) with Ray Barrett, Richard Roxburgh and Miranda Otto.

Australian and New Zealand release is set for mid-year through the Globe Film Co., with international sales being handled by Southern Star Film Sales.
