Washington bones up for U’s ‘Collector’

'Game' star to play quadriplegic cop

Denzel Washington, currently onscreen in Spike Lee’s basketball pic “He Got Game,” has signed to topline as a quadriplegic police detective in Universal’s Phillip Noyce-directed “The Bone Collector,” the studio confirmed Wednesday.

Washington’s detective character teams with a female officer to apprehend a serial killer. No other roles have been cast.

“Bone,” produced by Martin and Michael Bregman’s Bregman Prods. (“Scarface,” “Sea of Love,” “Carlito’s Way”), is adapted from Jeffrey Deaver’s novel, published last year.

Script is by Jeremy Iacone (“Bound by Honor”) and Christopher Crowe (“Fear,” “Last of the Mohicans.”)

Washington starred in this year’s “Fallen,” produced by Atlas Entertainment for Warner Bros. He’s currently shooting Fox’s “Martial Law,” with Bruce Willis and Annette Bening. Other credits include “Courage Under Fire,” “Crimson Tide” and “Philadelphia.” He won an Academy Award for his performance in 1989’s “Glory.”

Washington was repped by ICM.
