Gotham-based Unapix Films has greenlighted two genre pics — “Island of the Dead” and “Cord” — that it hopes will be destined for theatrical distribution.
“Island of the Dead” will be helmed by James Bruce (“Headless Body in Topless Bar”) and produced by Peter Koper (“Headless”) and Bruce Weiss (“The Unbelievable Truth”).
“Island” is set off the coast of the Bronx on Hart Island, where 800,000 indigent outcasts are buried in the real-life Potter’s Field of Gotham. In the supernatural thriller, a millionaire land developer who wants to build a luxury resort on the island does battle with the dead.
Pic, which has a budget of $3 million, will shoot this fall around New York City.
“Cord” will be produced in association with Blue Rider Pictures. It tells the story of an obstetrician and his wife who kidnap a pregnant woman in order to steal her baby. It will be directed by Maria Giese (“When Saturday Comes”).
Pic, which has a budget of $3.5 million, is skedded to lens in Los Angeles this summer.
Unapix Films president Robert Baruc brokered both deals and will take exec producer credits on both films.
Unapix senior veepee of acquisitions and production Alicia Reilly-Larson will be associate producer.
