U, Zucker redo ‘Martians’

Cult classic features Santa Claus

Universal Pictures and producer David Zucker have set up a remake of the 1964 cult classic “Santa Claus Conquers the Martians” with Ben Edlund writing and helming, sources said Friday.

Robert LoCash and Gil Netter will produce with Zucker.

Original pic, which starred a youthful Pia Zadora, is about a group of depressed Martians who kidnap Santa so they can brighten things up at home.

Pic has long been revered among cult movie lovers, and is included in the book “The 50 Worst Movies of All Time.”

Edlund, with Zucker, Netter and LoCash’s help, is expected to bring a suitably wry approach to the project.

Director-writer Edlund’s credits include “The Tick” for Fox Family and “Planet Ice” for ABC.

His deal was brokered by Marty Bowen and Rob Kim of UTA. Attorney Bob Offer also reps Edlund.

Zucker is currently directing “BASEketball,” starring the “South Park” pair of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, for Universal.

Zucker was repped by Richard Lovett and Michael Wimer of CAA.
