Trident Releasing has acquired international rights to the dark comedy “Love Kills,” the first pic to emerge from Mario Van Peebles and Mark Buntzman’s new filmmaking partnership, Ivan Cain Prods.
The under-$5 million pic was written and directed by Van Peebles and produced by Buntzman. Ivan Cain fully financed the pic using private investors.
The completed “Love” has an ensemble cast of Van Peebles, Lesley Ann Warren, Daniel Baldwin, Donovan Leitch, Alexis Arquette, Louise Fletcher, Loretta Devine and Melvin Van Peebles.
“Love” is a story of cons and treachery that abound inside a magnificent Beverly Hills estate when a widowed, fading actress falls for a smooth-talking new age masseur.
Ivan Cain has retained Duran Duran singer Simon Le Bon and his partner Nick Wood to create an original score for the pic.
Upcoming projects from Ivan Cain include actioner “Standing Knockdown,” helmed by Van Peebles, and romance “Crazy Love,” scripted by Van Peebles but with no director attached.
Van Peebles’ directing credits include “New Jack City,” “Posse” and “Panther.” Peebles also starred in “New Jack City” and “Heartbreak Ridge.”
Buntzman produced “The Exterminator” and wrote and directed “The Exterminator 2,” which starred Van Peebles.
Barbara Mannion, Trident’s vice president of acquisitions, brought the pic to the company’s attention. Deal was negotiated by Trident co-prexys Victoria Plummer and Jean Ovum directly with Buntzman and Van Peebles.
