Paramount Pictures and producer Lorne Michaels are going back to the prodigious “Saturday Night Live” well to create “Superstar,” a new feature spinoff of the longrunning NBC comedy show.
“SNL” castmember Molly Shannon will star in the pic, which is based around the role of Mary Katherine Gallagher, the character she originated in sketches on the series.
The pic, which is scripted by Steve Koren, will likely shoot in Toronto in the next few months. So far, no director has been named.
Little is known of the storyline except that it focuses on Gallagher, a nerdy Catholic schoolgirl, and her ambitions of superstardom.
Michaels will produce the film, with Bob Weiss exec producing. Paramount will distribute worldwide.
Since joining SNL in early 1995, Shannon has played Courtney Love; Terry, co-host of the fictional National Public Radio show “Delicious Dish”; and Circe Nightshade of “Goth Talk.”
Shannon stars with Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell in Paramount’s fall release “A Night at the Roxbury,” also based on an “SNL” sketch.
