R&B star Usher sets pic debut

Crooner joins Hayek, Hatosy in sci-fier

R&B star Usher Raymond will make his feature film debut in the untitled Robert Rodriguez-Kevin Williamson project currently lensing in Austin, Texas, for Miramax Films’ genre banner Dimension Films.

Formerly known as “The Faculty,” the sci-fier was written by Williamson and is being directed by Rodriguez, who is also producing with Elizabeth Avellan.

“We’re thrilled that Usher has chosen to make his feature film debut with us,” said Miramax co-chairman Bob Weinstein, who oversees the Dimension label.

The untitled project also stars Shawn Hatosy, Salma Hayek, Famke Janssen, Bebe Neuwirth, Jon Stewart and Elijah Wood, among others.

Usher’s TV credits include a recurring role as Brandy’s love interest on “Moesha” and “The Parent Hood.” This summer he will tour with Janet Jackson.

On behalf of Dimension, Usher’s deal was negotiated by Dimension president Cary Granat and Miramax veepee for business and legal affairs Brian Burkin.

On behalf of Usher, the deal was negotiated by agent Holly Davis of J.E.O.W. Entertainment, attorney Rosalyn E. Jones and manager Jonnetta Patton of J-Pat Management.
