Brittany Murphy (“Clueless”) has taken the role relinquished by Leelee Sobieski in Sony’s “Girl Interrupted” starring Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie.
James Mangold (“Cop Land”) is directing “Girl,” which is based on Susanna Kaysen’s memoirs of her stay in a Massachusetts mental hospital during the late 1960s. Pic is being produced by Cathy Konrad, Ryder, Carol Brodie and Douglas Wick.
Murphy recently appeared on Broadway in Arthur Miller’s “A View From the Bridge” with Anthony LaPaglia and Allison Janney. Murphy is repped by JoAnne Colonna at ICM and Molly Madden at 3 Arts Entertainment.

Vanessa Angel, last seen playing alongside Woody Harrelson, in the Peter and Bobby Farrelly comedy “Kingpin,” has won starring roles in Louis Morneau’s film for HBO, “Made Men,” and James Keach’s independent film “Camouflage.”
Angel will star opposite Jim Belushi, Timothy Dalton, and Michael Beach in the Richard Donner/Joel Silver-produced “Made Men.” “Camouflage” was written by Billy Bob Thornton and Tom Epperson, and is being produced by Anthony Esposito.
Both deals were closed by Innovative Artists and Kimberly Hines Management.
