PRAGUE — Film industryites are flocking to Karlovy Vary in record numbers this year, when the July 3 11 event will play host to honoree Michael Douglas.
Peter O’Toole, John Turturro, Tim Roth, Rod Steiger, Monty Python-er Terry Jones, Patrick Muldoon and rocker Lou Reed are also scheduled to appear.
Market to bow
The increased recognition accorded the Karlovy Vary may not be the only reason for this year’s higher attendance. The film market, making its bow July 5, is proving a strong enticement too.
Market director Denisa Strbova said that festival guests “are aware of the market, and are asking for market accreditation.”
Among the evenly divided list of buyers and sellers registered are Jan Mojto of Beta Film along with delegations from HBO, CLT Ufa, Bavaria Film, the Shooting Gallery, Mosfilm, Lenfilm and Russian pubcaster ORT, as well as Jadran Film, Telewiza Polska and Slovak distrib Continental Films.
A large number of films in all sections will be represented in person. Documentary helmer Roger Moore brings a pair of films and producer Saul Zaentz attends to pick up a Lifetime Contribution award.
