The Independent Feature Project has announced the creation of the Perry Ellis Breakthrough Award, which will be presented along with the rest of the Gotham awards Sept. 23 at the Chelsea Piers in Manhattan.
The award will be given to recognize an exemplary leading or supporting performance by an actor or actress who has not yet become a household name.
The Perry Ellis Breakthrough Award joins the Open Palm as the only other Gotham award to be presented for a specific independent film.
“One of the most exciting aspects of independent filmmaking is that it has yielded a new generation of American stars who are talented, committed and eager to explore the full range of their craft,” said IFP executive director Michelle Byrd. “Perry Ellis Intl. and the IFP have created the Perry Ellis Breakthrough Award to spotlight the work of an exceptional actor.”
