Paramount Home Video has announced its entrance into the DVD market and expects to begin releasing DVD titles later this year.
Other majors, including Disney, Universal and MGM, have already jumped on the DVD bandwagon, but Paramount took its time. “We’ve been studying DVD carefully and closely,” said Eric Doctorow, president of Paramount Worldwide Home Video. “We believe that the environment has reached a point where it’s now appropriate for us to enter.”
Doctorow cited the growing momentum in player and disc sales, along with a high-enough level of product acceptance by both retailers and consumers, as a major incentive to enter DVD. Also important in Paramount’s decision was the progress made in antipiracy legislation and technologies. “We believe our product will now be adequately protected,” said Doctorow.
Paramount is currently in the process of developing a release schedule for its DVD product, which will include new releases as well as films from the studio’s library. No titles have yet been announced.
