The National Assn. of Television Program Executives has canceled this year’s planned ANIFX show — what would have been the org’s second annual animation and visual effects confab — citing low pre-registration numbers.
“We just weren’t getting people signing up as we were anticipating,” said NATPE prexy and CEO Bruce Johansen. “And we found we couldn’t get commitments for a three-day event.”
The ANIFX show had been slated to run May 11-13 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Last year’s show drew 3,500 attendees, said Johansen, adding that the registration tally for this year’s event was running “well below” that total. He blamed the low signup numbers on the sharp rise in similarly themed conventions and conferences focusing on animation, visual effects and digital imaging technology.
NATPE’s Johansen said the event is not dead, however, but will be downsized to a single day, to take place sometime during the fall. Details have not yet been hammered out.
