MADRID — Eduardo Zulueta has been named director of programming at Spanish digital operator Via Digital. He will report directly to Via’s new managing director, Juan Ruiz de Gauna.
Zulueta’s appointment is the first made by Ruiz de Gauna since he took up the reins of Via in April.
A graduate of Georgetown University, where he studied economics, Zulueta worked in Spain for Citibank Espana and the Bank of America before becoming general manager of post production house Molinare in the late ’80s. He was MD of satellite channel packager Multicanal from 1996.
In the bitter digital battle between Sogecable’s platform Canal Satelite Digital (CSD) and Via Digital, the latter is not proving a pushover. In May it approved an amplification of its capital base to $367 million and recently filed a new order for 300,000 digital set top boxes from Thomson.
Via’s current subscriptions stand at some 300,000, compared with CSD’s 500,000.
The New York born Zulueta can be expected to use his U.S. background to revisit deals clinched by rival CSD with six of the U.S. majors, some of which are nonexclusive or leave room for further film and TV series rights acquisitions.
