Zaloom, Mayfield splitting

Film school pals dissolve 16-year-old ZM Prods.

ZM Prods., the film and television production company headed by film school pals George Zaloom and Les Mayfield, is taking down its shingle after 16 years in business, following what the partners have called an amicable split.

Mayfield will continue to develop his directing career, following helming credits on “Flubber” and “Miracle on 34th Street.” Zaloom, who recently wrote the pilot for a cable anthology series he’s exec producing, is also planning to start directing next year, beginning with an indie film script he wrote.

“It was a great run, we are very proud of the company’s history and feel fortunate to have also helped others along the way,” said partner George Zaloom.

Zaloom and Mayfield met while at USC film school and formed their company shortly after graduating. The company pioneered the use of behind-the-scenes footage as a promotional tool, working with Amblin Entertainment to document such productions as “Back to the Future,” “Empire of the Sun” and “Jurassic Park.

With Showtime, ZM produced acclaimed 1992 doc “Hearts of Darkness: a Filmmaker’s Apocalypse,” which screened at Cannes and won several awards. Other ZM directing/producing film credits include “Encino Man.”

TV production credits include short-lived MTM syndie drama “The Cape” and movies of the week. The firm also helped relaunch the “The Wonderful World of Disney” brand, producing remakes of camp classics such as “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” and other programming for ABC.

In 1997, Zaloom formed ZMC Prods. with producers Jean-Michel Michenaud and Christopher Cowan. That operation pro-duced several projects, including the documentary “Frank Capra’s American Dream” and the Emmy-winning “Life: 60 Years in Pictures.”
