SYDNEY — Four months after it was first reported — and subsequently denied — United Intl. Pictures confirmed Thursday that Peter Rose is joining the international theatrical distribution co-venture June 15 as senior VP of international marketing, reporting to exec VP marketing Hy Smith.

That, however, was merely half the story. Unsaid, but widely known, is that Rose is being “parked” in that slot as an interim move before he steps up to replace Smith.

Rose, an Australian who jumped recently from the CEO’s position at Australian satcaster Australis Media just before it went belly-up, has been telling broadcasting colleagues for several months that he’s being hired for the top marketing job at UIP.

That was reported in Daily Variety on Feb. 18 and immediately denied by UIP president/CEO Paul Oneile, a fellow Australian who has known Rose and worked with him intermittently for more than 10 years.

It’s believed senior execs at Paramount were particularly impressed with Rose’s credentials and supported Oneile’s move to hire him, ultimately to succeed UIP vet Smith.
