Smelzer tapped to top Variety ad team

Ex-Buzz publisher to bring sales savvy to paper

Mark Smelzer has been tapped managing director of U.S. sales for Variety, responsible for overseeing the company’s domestic sales offices in Los Angeles, New York and Chicago.

He replaces Rose Einstein, who was recently named publisher of Video Business, one of the Variety Group of publications.

Smelzer will be responsible for maintaining and increasing the publications’ growing advertising base. Variety, the L.A. and Gotham editions of Daily Variety, and http://www.variety.com have the largest reach of any entertainment biz news publications in the world.

“We’re pleased to be adding an executive of Mark’s caliber to our team,” said Charles Koones, U.S. publishing director of Variety. “His extensive experience and relationships in both the entertainment and publishing industries will be a tremendous asset to our publications.”

Smelzer most recently was publisher of Buzz magazine. During his two years in that job, he oversaw advertising sales, circulation, production and marketing, which led to increased revenues for the mag. He started as the magazine’s national advertising manager seven years ago and then shifted to ad director, managing the sales staffs in N.Y., Chi and L.A.

Smelzer, who received his undergraduate degree and MBA from UCLA, also served as an advertising account manager for Premiere magazine.
