RAI posts gains, rising costs

Net profit close to $85 mil for '97, up $30 mil

MILAN — Italy’s pubcaster RAI, which controls three national terrestrial channels, three digital satellite services and three radio channels, posted a net profit close to ($85 million) in 1997, compared to $55 million one year earlier, according to preliminary results which the network’s board is expected to approve in the next few days.

Revenues rose to $2.47 billion in 1997 from $2.33 billion in 1996, and the web showed a positive cash flow of $200 220 million.

Production and acquisition expenses rose by $110 million to $920 million, a third of which for fiction. Advertising revenues grew by $110 million to $950 million.
