Prague’s Galaxie to add six screens

Czech exhib already has 12% of market

PRAGUE — Galaxie multiplex, the Prague success story that introduced multiplexes to Central Europe, is expanding.

Petr Kot, general director of Galaxie owner Kino 2005, said the six-screen expansion should be ready for Christmas 1999, with the total 14 screens accommodating about 3,000 people. The ambitious $15 million complex, which will be located on a greenfield site that borders the current cinema, will include a shopping and entertainment center as well as underground parking. Kot said the multiplex aims to be the most easily accessible in Prague.

Increasing share of market

Galaxie, which opened in April 1995, has claimed an increasing share of the Czech box office. Admission revenues alone are estimated at around $3 million, some 12% of the entire market. The multiplex also has a variety of refreshment centers and began publishing its own cinema newsletter (funded by advertising only) earlier this month. A host of shops, food outlets and services have opened in the suburban center in Galaxie’s wake.

Kino 2005, a joint venture with plex newcomer Toucan Entertainment, has plans for a second 10 screen, 3,000 seat multiplex in Prague, now marked for the end of 2000. Further down the line is a plex for neighbor capital Bratislava, which should happen by 2001.
