Isherwood tapped chief theater critic

Variety editor heads for B'way

Charles Isherwood has been appointed chief theater critic of Variety and Daily Variety, vice president and editor-in-chief Peter Bart announced. Isherwood assumes his new duties immediately.

In addition to reviewing theater in New York, Isherwood will travel to other cities where important plays are opening. He also will supervise the Legit section of Variety and contribute occasional commentaries to that section.

Matt Wolf will provide theater reviews from his London base and also will write more commentaries on the Legit scene as part of Variety’s expanded theater coverage. And reporter Claude Brodesser will continue to cover the theater scene in New York. Isherwood, Wolf and Brodesser will be regular contributors to the Legit page in Daily Variety Gotham.

A graduate of Stanford U., Isherwood has been serving as a senior editor for Variety and Daily Variety. Born in Palo Alto, Calif., Isherwood, 33, worked at L.A. Style Magazine before joining Variety in 1993.
