Gerson climbs at USA’s Latino net

He's VP and managing director of new division

MIAMI — Universal has upped Mauricio Gerson, G.M. of the USA Latin America network, to VP and managing director of newly created division Universal Studios Networks.

The appointment comes ahead of a planned relocation of the New York-based Latino cabler to Miami, a move slated to be completed by Sept. 1.

As VP, Gerson’s duties will expand to include ad sales for USA’s Latino net. He also will oversee the rollout of a regional version of the Sci-Fi Channel, which is slated to launch this year.

The studio also has appointed Damaris Valero as VP of new business for Universal Studios Networks, with responsibilities including affiliate sales for USA Latino. Until last year, Valero was senior VP of affiliate sales for MTV Latino.

According to a USA spokesman, Universal Studios Networks Intl. prexy Tony Garland authorized the web’s move to Miami in order for it to be closer to its target market.

USA will join Latino nets MTV, Discovery, CBS TeleNoticias, Gems, Locomotion and others in Miami, which is home base to the greatest concentration of pan-Latino cable networks.
