Former Cineplex Odeon senior VP and head film buyer Michael McCartney has joined the 660-screen Edwards Theatres Circuit as film buyer.
In his new post, McCartney will report to Chris Leroy, head film buyer for the Newport Beach-based chain.
In April, Edwards announced plans to build 112 screens at eight theater complexes in Southern California.
Edwards is one of the few remaining regional powerhouses in the nation, having steadfastly refused to sell out to a larger national circuit.
The chain, which has a strong presence in several outlying Los Angeles suburbs, is particularly dominant in Orange County.
McCartney worked at Toronto-based Cineplex Odeon for 12 years. In 1988 he was named VP, film. He was promoted to head film buyer in September 1995.
McCartney was one of the first casualties of the widespread layoffs among Cineplex execs implemented in connection with the circuit’s merger with Sony’s Loews Theatres. That deal closed in May.
Edwards execs could not be reached for comment.
