When the Cradle Falls

When the Cradle Falls (Tues. (14), 9-11 p.m., CBS) Filmed in San Diego by Freyda Rothstein Prods. in association with Hearst Entertainment. Executive producer, Freyda Rothstein; co-executive producer, Rob Hedden; line producer, Gideon Amir; director, Paul Schneider; camera, Tom Del Ruth; editor, Andrew Cohen; production design, Alfred Sole; sound, Jacob Goldstein; music, Joseph Conlan; casting, Abra Edelman, Elisa Goodman. Cast: Linda Gray, Cathy Lee Crosby , Dorian Harewood, Scott Reeves, Martha Byrne, Karl Mkinen, Briditta Dau, Joel De La Fuente, Joe Ivy, Henry Woronicz, Kellie Waymire, Roy Werner, Melody Rae, James Newcomb, Yuma Iwama, Henry Jordan, Yavone Evans, Doug Waldo, Bodie Newcomb , D. Candis Paule, Zachary Stauring, Tyler Stauring, Annie Hinton, Tamiko Washington, Nancy Williams, Nancy Renee Since CBS had only supplied a rough cut of "When the Cradle Falls," without the sound effects and music, it's hard to really be fair to this MOW, although it seems that no amount of dramatic music would detract from the wooden acting and contrived scares of this kidnapping "thriller." Brian (Scott Reeves) and Donna (Martha Byrne) are a young couple with an adorable toddler, Justin (Zachary and Tyler Stauring), and both parents try to do it all: She keeps her job (although she can work at home), and he's as full-time a dad as he can be. But it's tiring, and their marriage strains under the stress. Meanwhile, hospital worker Joan (Cathy Lee Crosby) is being blackmailed by lawyer Helen (Linda Gray) into finding babies that Helen's operative can kidnap --- see, Helen sells the little angels to desperate, rich and unscrupulous couples who want kids without the hassle of actually giving birth. Well, little Justin is eventually kidnapped and, in an unreasonable and unbelievable plot point, the police suspect Brian and Donna. Well, they're shocked (just shocked!) with this turn of events, and begin some amateur sleuthing, hoping to track down the baby-snatchers. Plagued by cheap scares and cliches (the hot young babysitter comes on to a shirtless and buff Brian), plus the lifeless presence of Linda Gray, "Cradle" doesn't rock, nor does it roll, nor does it engage. Tech credits are fine. --- Carole Horst
