Social Studies

Social Studies (Tues.(18), 8:30-9 p.m., UPN) Taped at Universal Studios by Film Fatale Inc., Sandollar Prods. and Touchstone TV. Exec producers, Sandy Gallin, Gail Berman; co-exec producer-creator-writer, Nancylee Myatt; producer, Jason Shubb; director, J.D. Lobue; camera, Charles R. Conkilin Jr.; editor, George W. Brooks; audio, Larry Lasota; video, Jean Mason; music, Wendy Levy; production designer, David Sackeroff; casting, Nikki Valko. Cast: Bonnie McFarlane, Adam Ferrara, Lisa Wilhoit, Vanessa Evigan, Corbin Allred, Julia Duffy, Monica McSwain, Rashaan Nall, Jarrett Lennon, Jordan Brower, Joel Berti, Matthew Stephen. UPN introduces Nancylee Myatt's lame concept in which a femme history teacher throws crude language at the supposedly helpless headmistress of a onetime exclusive boarding school now gone to "financially diverse" students. Flatly directed by J. D. Lobue, the unfortunate new entry somehow manages to insult other new TV sitcoms.CreatorMyatt, writer of the first episode, sets a young blonde sexpot against one of her roommates, a plain girl with few prospects. The plain girl won't let the blonde, who instead of studying broke curfew with a young man, read her notes from the history class, and has the blonde blab out the diary secrets of another student.Of course, the blonde, going phftt on the test, tries excusing herself. But the streetwise teacher nails her, the diarist sets up her own form of revenge, and the headmistress comes up with a traditional style of humiliation. Julia Duffy has been handed the teacup-with-a-steel-handle role of headmistress Frances, who attended Woodridge when it was a proper finishing school. Bonnie McFarlane's Kit, the history teacher opposing her with glum, pointless repartee.Vanessa Evigan plays spiteful, round-heeled blonde Sara, and Lisa Wilhoit limns diarist Madison. None of the students are pleasant, which makes comedy just about impossible to promote. Adam Ferrara is the gym teacher Dan, who makes Katherine's heart beat a bit faster. Dialog's heavy with sour sarcasm, hurtful slams and, in Kit's case, a crudity or two. One girl who seems to be wearing braces on her teeth is stuck behind the schoolroom door and gets laughs from the studio audience whenever the door bumps her. It's not high comedy, it's not low comedy; it's not comedy. The writing with its puerile humor is poor, the acting at best routine. Audiences will demand better or "Social Studies" will perish. --- Tony Scott
