UPN Tuesday series bows drop from ’96

UPN’s Tuesday night season debut fell 10% below last year’s first Tuesday performance, with the netlet’s two new Tuesday series “Hitz” and “Head Over Heels” registering double-digit drops from their year-ago timeslots.

UPN averaged a 4.6 rating and 8 share in the overnight markets, compared with a 5.1/8 last year. Once again, the netlet’s ratings may have been above average last year in some markets because it was only up against the low-rated Democratic National Convention.

The double-pump season premiere of “Moesha” rated a 5.2/9 at 8 p.m. and at 8:30 p.m. “Clueless” won’t debut in the 8 p.m. slot until Sept. 23. Last season, “Moesha” debuted at 8 p.m. with a 6.0/10, which was 13% higher than this year’s performance. At 8:30, “Moesha” outperformed last year’s timeslot debut of “Homeboys in Outer Space” by 4%.

At 9 p.m., Andrew Dice Clay’s new series “Hitz” rated a 4.1/7, which was off 21% from its “Moesha” lead-in and 13% from the timeslot performance last year of “Malcolm & Eddie.” At 9:30 p.m., “Head Over Heels” rated a 3.8/6, off 7% from its lead-in and 16% from the year-ago timeslot debut of “Sparks.”
