UPN goes vampire hunting in a new spec titled “Real Vampires … Exposed!” set to air Jan. 20.
The spec will go behind the scenes of several underground “vampire clubs” and include interviews with the people who frequent them. The special also will explore the history and lore behind the vampire legend as well as present-day vampire superstitions.
For those who thought the whole gothic gloom-and-doom thing fizzled out in the 1980s, think again. According to UPN sources, there is a thriving underground world of vampire and gothic role-playing clubs where one can leave the office and meet up with friends for a little evening frolic in cape and fangs.
UPN is banking on the public’s current fascination with vampires, as witnessed by a growing number of vampire-related Internet sites. The Anne Rice series of vampire books and such movies as “Interview With the Vampire” and Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” — not to mention UPN rival the WB’s “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” — have further kindled public interest in the “undead.”
“Real Vampires … Exposed!” will preempt UPN’s regular 8 p.m. Tuesday sitcom lineup and be followed at 9 p.m. by a Dick Clark-produced spec, “Alien Encounter: The Incident at Lake County.”
Spec is exec produced by Bob Bain and produced by the “Sightings” team of Bradley and Mack Anderson.
