Pops tart up “Oprah”

VH1 music-vid show to air segment on Winfrey show

NEW YORK — On today’s “Oprah Winfrey Show,” watch for those fake eyelashes to finally come off.

Seems talkshow host Oprah Winfrey and company decided to let those bad boys from VH1’s popular “Pop-Up Video” do what they do best: Dig and dish. What was she thinking when she invited these sultans of satire (known for spicing up more than 200 music videos with a combination of embarrassing facts about the artists, random tidbits about how videos are produced, and even the occasional insightful historical fact) to the show?

“Pop-Up” producers Tad Low and Woody Thompson were surprised that the Queen of Talk allowed them to snoop around the set, sift through the office and shake down audience members in order to come up with about 30 “pops” for a 2-1/2-minute, pre-produced segment that “Oprah” will air today.

“While we were doing our ‘investigative reporting,’ someone told us Oprah wears fake eyelashes, so we called her on it during the live interview,” Low laughs. “She took them off right then and did the rest of the show without them.”

Watch for trademark “Pop-Up” bloop-and-bubbles relaying the following:

The “Oprah” staff drinks 200 pots of coffee a day

Oprah is irritated by the fact that people think her favorite color is purple, just because she was in the movie. It’s green.

Staff members say the audience members who want to be on camera always wear red.

“Oprah’s” studio once served as a morgue during a Chicago ferry disaster in the early 1900s.

In “Oprah’s” highest-ever-rated show (“Oprah’s Diet Revealed”), Oprah wheeled out 67 pounds of fresh animal fat — after having lost 67 pounds herself.

So how will this play in Peoria?

“All the ‘Oprah’ producers were saying they think the show will get a 10 rating” Low offers. “And in Oprah-speak that means real good — even Barbra Streisand only got a 12.”

Well, it’s sweeps. Apparently Oprah will even get popped to stay at the top.
