Oz’s Prime TV hits Argentina

BUENOS AIRES — Australian Prime Television Ltd. has signed a non-binding purchase agreement with Alejandro Romay, owner and CEO of Argentina’s Channel 9.

Argentine press reports say the Australian company is buying an 80% stake in Channel 9 for around $400 million, but the channel’s press officer, Gabriel Jacobo, said nothing could be said regarding the agreement until December, when it will become final.

Romay, who recently signed co-production agreements with Mexico’s Televisa and is negotiating with Italy’s RAI, will remain as head of the channel until the deal is signed.

Channel 9 is the lowest-rated web in the country, after losing its No. 1 position to Telefe about six years ago.
