So there was Fran Drescher, chatting up Jay Leno on the Nov. 4 edition of “The Tonight Show.” She was describing for Leno — in explicit detail — a frightening experience that had happened to her on Halloween.
Seems that the nasal star of CBS’ “The Nanny” sliced open her finger while cutting a “low-fat” muffin. It was just awful. Lots of blood. Paramedics were called. She was whisked to the hospital, but not before showering and changing her clothes. An actress needs to keep up a certain image, ya know — even while suffering blood loss.
It was a nice, entertaining little story, perfect save for one tiny flaw: It wasn’t true.
Drescher apparently made up the anecdote to have something funny to discuss on the show, which explains Leno’s amazement at Drescher having no scar in the spot of her alleged injury.
A spokeswoman for “The Tonight Show” maintained that neither Leno nor anyone else connected with the show had any knowledge that the finger-cut story was anything but authentic.
Though Drescher’s publicist, Cari Ross, was in Europe and unavailable for comment, it was learned that Drescher admitted that her story was “all a joke” and indicated this was simply the kind of stuff one does when appearing on these shows.
