Diller inks Buchanan

Aclaimed jounalist will produce, host murder in Miami show

Acclaimed reporter Edna Buchanan, a familiar name to South Floridians, has inked a deal with Barry Diller’s Silver King Broadcasting to produce and host a TV series about murder in Miami.

Buchanan’s show will be part of the “CityVision” local programming block Silver King intends to roll out next spring on WYHS, its UHF station in Miami. The Pulitzer Prize-winning Buchanan was a long-time police reporter for the Miami Herald. She also penned the bestselling true-crime tome “The Corpse Had a Familiar Face,” among other books.

WYHS currently carries Home Shopping Network programming, but Diller’s goal is to replace that with eight to 10 hours a day of locally produced programming starting in the spring. On Wednesday, Silver King confirmed the appointment of Matti Leshem as the station’s editor-in-chief, who will spearhead the development of the locally oriented programming.

Leshem comes to Silver King after turns as an actor, musicvideo director and producer of original online pro-gramming. Most recently, Leshem was a partner in the production house Cobalt Moon, where he created and exec produced the comedy program “Second City Headline News” for the Microsoft Network.

Jon Miller, prexy and CEO of Sil-ver King parent HSNi Broadcasting, credited Leshem as an up-and-coming creative talent “with cutting-edge vision as well as extensive experience.”

Buchanan’s show is described as a “behind-the-scenes look at murder in Miami.”

“We want to tell stories about life and death; the heroes and villains in Miami, the world’s most fascinating city,” Buchanan said.

Silver King also has signed comedian Monique Marvez, a Miami native, to host a live daily variety show from the storefront TV studio Silver King is building in the heart of Miami’s fashionable South Beach district. The show, produced by Miami-based Forti/Layne Entertainment, will blend comedy sketches with interview and performance segs.
