Racy sex scene, lesbian kiss pass ‘Relativity’ test

One kiss between two women is all right, but two is pushing it. That’s the lesson the producers of the ABC drama “Relativity” learned when they submitted the episode titled “The Day the Earth Moved” for review.

In the episode, which airs Saturday, characters portrayed by Lisa Edelstein and Kristin Eatillo kiss for about 10 seconds.

While the kissing scene gave ABC’s standards-and-practices unit some headaches, the scene is pretty tame com-pared with the opening scene between leads David Conrad and Kimberly Williams. That scene shows the two having sex and a climax is implied. When the script was first submitted to ABC, execs balked at the word climax but agreed to air it.

“This is the culmination of a story line that has been worked on for 12 weeks,” said the show’s co-executive producer Edward Zwick.

One show exec said the original script called for two lesbian kisses. However, the message from ABC was that one was OK but two implied the characters liked it.

Marvin Goldsmith, president of ABC Sales, said the episode is being screened by advertisers early this week. Given the show’s tenor and 10 p.m. timeslot, “it’s not off the subject; it’s not out of place,” said Jon Mandel, senior VP at Grey Advertising.

One industry exec who’s screened the episode added: “I didn’t watch it with a raincoat.”
