Sandy McGovern has been named president of the National Geographic Channel, a newly formed joint venture between National Geographic Television (NGT) and NBC, expected to launch later this years.
McGovern will have overall responsibility for the startup of National Geographic-branded channels, targeted initially for Latin America, Europe and Asia. That will include implementing strategic planning, negotiating with regional joint venture partners, as well as managing the venture’s operations, programming, distribution and promotion teams. NGT will be headquartered in Washington, D.C.
“National Geographic has a long history of distinctive, award-winning programming that with NBC’s global media infrastructure will support new channels on both the domestic and international marketplace. I also anticipate that we will be making an announcement soon with regard top the rollout of National Geographer’s first branded channel,” said McGovern.
McGovern was retained by NGT as managing director of network development in July 1996.
